Your client's requirements

Working to MTA, US Owner and ISO 19650 BIM Standards

Every client's BIM rules cover the same four things. Here's how the two main systems compare.

United StatesExample: MTA, New York
ISO 19650UK rail: TfL, HS2, Network Rail
Who writes the rules
United StatesThe owner hands every firm on the project its BIM Execution Plan.
ISO 19650The client lists what it needs, and your team writes the BIM Execution Plan that answers it.
What each element must carry
United StatesThe owner's standard element types, plus data such as material, grade and weight.
ISO 19650The information the client asked for at each stage.
How the model develops
United StatesMore detail at each design submission (LOD 300, then LOD 400), then checked against what was built.
ISO 19650A delivery plan for each team, listing what it hands over and when.
Where the files live
United StatesThe owner's own workspace, set up by its CAD administrator.
ISO 19650A shared project platform where files move from draft to shared to published.

Whichever applies, we turn it into one set of project rules your whole team follows.

From plan to setup

Turning Your BIM Execution Plan into a Project Setup

Set the rules at kickoff, and every submission starts from them.

Coordinates, floors and grids

The shared setup every discipline's model is built on.

Seed files and workspace settings, set once and locked for your whole team

Every discipline models on the same grid and floors.

File naming

How every model, drawing and document is named and filed.

Folder structure and naming rules set up in ProjectWise

Every new file goes in the right folder and follows the naming convention.

Model breakdown

How models are split by discipline and area, and how they reference each other.

Model files split and linked as references

Each discipline works in its own files and sees the latest version of everyone else's.

Element data

The family, part and attributes each element has to carry.

Catalog items with the required attributes, placed with the right family and part

Required data comes with each element when it's placed.

Level of development per stage

How far each element has to be developed at each submission.

An LOD table for each submission

Your modelers see which elements reach which LOD, and when.

Submission formats

The file types, sheets and exports each submission needs.

A submission checklist and export settings for every package

Each package goes out in the formats your client asked for.

BIM Execution Plan Support FAQ

Our main contractor writes the project BEP. Where do you fit in?

Your main contractor sets the project's BIM Execution Plan, and every firm on the team delivers to it. We set up your team's side: we list what the plan asks your firm to deliver, set up the coordinates, naming and data rules in your workspace, share the LOD table, and review your work against the plan before each submission.

Which BIM standards do you work to?

Your client's. On MTA projects, that means the MTA's BIM Execution Plan and what it asks of each deliverable. On UK rail projects for TfL, HS2 and Network Rail, it means ISO 19650 and the client's information requirements, as on other ISO 19650 projects worldwide. On other US projects, we work to the owner's own BIM standard, which is usually based on the National BIM Standard (NBIMS-US) and the BIMForum LOD Specification.

What is the difference between the EIR and the BEP?

On ISO 19650 projects, the client's Exchange Information Requirements (EIR) set out what information it needs, when and in what form. The BIM Execution Plan is the delivery team's answer: how it will produce that information, who is responsible for each part and which standards it follows. A pre-appointment BEP goes in with the tender and is confirmed after appointment.

Can you help us prepare our BIM Execution Plan?

Yes. We read your client's requirements and help your team prepare the BEP sections that cover your work. Your BIM lead reviews and signs off the final document.

What does LOD mean in our BEP?

LOD stands for Level of Development: how far each element in the model can be relied on at a given stage. It is set element by element, so one model can hold columns at one level and finishes at another. Our LOD table sets out which elements reach which LOD at each submission, so your modelers build what each stage asks for.

Can you join partway through a project?

Yes. If a submission has come back with comments on naming, data or LOD, we compare your current files with the plan, list what has to change and who changes it, and set up the rules for your next submission.

How do you work with our team?

Through kickoff and coordination meetings with your discipline leads, held online, and directly inside your ProjectWise where the project allows it.

How is BEP support priced?

Every engagement is scoped first, then quoted. Cost depends on your client's requirements, the size of your team, the number of submissions and whether we join at tender, at kickoff or partway through the project.
